Early detection and treatment of pathological conditions of pregnancy
Diagnose pre-eclampsia, intra-uterina growth retardation, premature rupture of the membranes and preterm labour, before the second trimester of pregnancy.
Porteurs du projet
Pr Vassilis Tsatsaris, Professor of Gynecology/Obstetrics.
Dr Jean Guibourdenche, Biologist registered in prenatal maternal screening and fetal biochemistry.
Dr Danièle Evain-Brion, Director of Research at UMR 767-University of Paris-Descartes, Director of PremUP Foundation.
Context
70.000 of the 800.000 pregnancies in France per year are pathological. Although there has been considerable progress in the detection and treatment of pathological conditions of pregnancy caused by infection or chromosome or genetic factors, clinicians are still helpless when faced with pathological conditions of pregnancy originating in the placenta, which are responsible for high fetal and maternal morbidity. At present early prediction of pre-eclampsia, intra-uterine growth retardation, premature rupture of the membranes and the preterm labour, is not effective. Intervention and treatment of the mother starts too late when the symptoms are already in place.
Objectives
- Early detection of pathological conditions of pregnancy originating in the placenta to optimize maternal and neonatal treatment.
- Improving ultrasound technology to evaluate more accurately the normal and pathological development of the placenta in the first trimester of pregnancy.
- Utilisation of samples of maternal blood taken during the 10th-13th week of pregnancy to identify relevant biological markers aiding diagnosis, prognosis and follow-up care of pathological
conditions of pregnancy. - Validation of drugs for the prevention and treatment of these pathologies.
Added value of PremUp Foundation
Thanks to its technological platforms and clinical and biological data banks, PremUp will be able to link clinical data with that of imaging and biology. This will ensure real continuity in terms of diagnosis and treatment of the pregnant woman and the newborn baby.
Placed at the interface of the university hospital milieu and the manufacturers of reagents, the foundation will ensure a significant link between basic and applied research.
Moreover, the validation through the use on such a large scale of biological markers and imaging in the 3 care centres of PremUp will facilitate the training of health care professionals.
